Writing about a thousand words

I’ve been working a report this week, and I wrote a page of text to explain a particular concept before deciding to replace it with an image that really said it all.

Which got me thinking…

Writing about writing, Week #9

This might be a silly question to ask writers, but in your opinion, is a picture really worth a thousand words?

Writing about writing advice

Returning to the regularly scheduled web stuff 4 writers programme, here is this week’s writing about writing topic.

Writing about writing, Week #8

What one piece of advice would you give someone who was just beginning to write fiction?

Writing about writing courses

Tomorrow night, I’m starting a four week writing workshop, organised by the London literary project, Spread the Word.  With an MA in creative writing under my belt as well as several undergraduate papers and a number of evening classes, I guess you could say I’m a bit of a writing workshop junkie.

However, I know that not all writers feel the same way about the usefulness of such workshops – which leads me to this week’s writing about writing question…

Writing about writing, Week #7

What’s your opinion of writing courses?  Do they offer anything to writers?  Is writing something that you think can be taught?

Writing about books about writing

Happy Tuesday morning everyone.  Here’s this week’s writing about writing topic.

Writing about writing, Week #6Bookshelf

In most large bookstores, you’ll find a shelf with books that have been written about writing. Books that teach you how to write a best selling novel. Books that tell you how to write a script; to sell freelance articles; to publish your poetry.

Have read any of these books? If so, are there any that you’d recommend to others?

Writing about word counts

With a novel draft to finish and all this talk of NaNoWriMo, I’ve been thinking a lot about word counts this week.

Cover of ShantaramEarlier in the year, I read Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts.  I don’t normally read such long books.  I don’t think I could ever write such a long book.  But I couldn’t help but be impressed by this 900 plus page epic and it’s my inspiration for this week’s writing about writing topic.

Writing about writing, Week #5

What’s the longest piece you’ve written?  How much time did you spend on it?  Would you want to write something longer in the future?

When’s your writing time?

I didn’t get a chance to write yesterday.  The morning was dark, I got up late.  There was rubbish to take out.  The trains were crowded and there was no room for scribbling notes.  Lunch was eaten at my desk, working on a website with an impending deadline.  Then in the evening, an unexpected appointment and I didn’t get home till late.

I’ve been blogging here at web stuff 4 writers for a month now, and one of the things I’ve learnt is the need to keep to a regular schedule.  With that in mind, here’s this week’s writing about writing topic.

Writing about writing, Week #4

ClockWhen do you do most of your writing?  Are there certain times of the day when you’re more productive?  Do you have a writing schedule that you keep to, or do you grab moments whenever you can?

Do your blog entries have a second life?

Since it’s Tuesday morning in London, here is this week’s writing about writing question.  If you have a blog about writing, feel free to use this – or any of the past weeks’ questions – to prompt an entry.

Writing about writing, Week #3

Have you ever used entries from your journal/blog in your fiction or other writing projects?  If so, how?  And did you write the original journal/blog piece with that future purpose in mind?

If you’ve answered this question in your blog, please leave a link to the relevant entry in the comments box below.  Alternatively you can write/paste your answer directly in the comments box.

Writing about writing challenges

Following on from last week’s entry, here’s another possible post topic for blogs about writing.

Writing about writing: Week #2

NaNoWriMo 2007 participant iconSign-ups opened yesterday for this year’s NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month).  Participants aim to write a 50,000 word novel during the 30 days of November.

Have you ever participated in writing challenges like this before?  Have you found them (or do you think you would find them) useful in any way?

Weekly topics for writing blogs

Writing in a diaryIn last Thursday’s entry I mentioned that one of the most frustrating aspects of keeping a writing blog is coming up with regular topics to write about. In the past, I’ve used topics from the fantastic ‘Booking Through Thursday’ blog, but the focus of their questions is usually on the stories that you’re reading rather than the ones you’re writing.

As a way to remedy this, I’m proposing to post weekly ‘writing about writing’ topics which you can use, if you so desire, as the starting point for your own blog entries.

So here goes…

Writing about writing: Week #1

Do you think keeping a journal or blog is a useful practice for writers?  Why or why not?
